Merle Locke - Sioux Ledger Art

Merle is of Oglala Lakota descent and resides in Porcupine, South Dakota. His paintings are very symbolic in nature depicting Native scenes and specific Lakota warriors. The Ledger Art itself is an artform that originated in the late 1800s at a time when the Indians were being removed from their lands. The buffalo hides they used as a surface to paint on were hard to come by with buffalo becoming scarce. During raids, they would find ledger books, and take them, using their pages to paint on as a substitute for the hides. Although the paintings themselves are new, the ledgers shown here date back to that period in history.
