''My work is about witnessing how the passing of time effects the appearance of surfaces in the world around us and I express this in a contemporary way.''
Santa Fe based artist Kara Young has created the Earth and Fire series with the prior statement in mind. These pieces are made from handmade paper which is then cast into the desired shapes and sizes. After coating the surface with a plaster like material, they are then copper or silver leafed. Kara then paints with acrylic and wax (encaustic) and adds the final touches of actual patinated copper as a center piece. Although modern, the tones are earthy and inherently southwestern.
