Choco/Wounaan Baskets from Panama
The Darien wilderness is home to the Embera and Wounaan Indian tribes. This untouched wilderness on the Panama/Colombia border is without roads or electricity, and its inhabitants lead lives that seem ancient, however very human at the same time. While the men fish, hunt and tend gardens the women weave beautiful baskets with hand dyed palm leaves. The baskets are decorated with pre-Colombian designs as well as bird and insect motifs. These unique artifacts are a rare and beautiful find, made by a people whose techniques are unhampered by modern technology.
